Magazine Matter. A Manifesto for the Material Lives of Visual Knowledge

Magazines matter.

Not because of what they contain.

Because of what they do.

They organise perception. They distribute attention. They connect places, people, technologies, and ideas. They transform images and texts into shared forms of visual knowledge.

Illustrated periodicals are not neutral containers of information. They are infrastructures of visual knowledge. They are assemblages of paper, ink, printing technologies, editorial decisions, economic systems, distribution networks, archives, and readers, viewers, and handlers.

What we call visual knowledge emerges through these complex relations.

The production of visual knowledge is neither hierarchical nor horizontal. It unfolds at every scale. Editorial systems, institutions, markets, and technologies shape visibility from above. Readers, viewers, collectors, communities, and practices of reuse continually reshape it from below.

Knowledge circulates recursively. It sediments downward. It proliferates upward. Its infrastructures are continuously remade through use.

Meaning does not reside in images and texts alone. It emerges through juxtaposition. Across every page and through every spread. Through sequence and the encounter between content and form.

Materiality is not secondary to meaning. It is one of its conditions.

Digitisation has expanded access while often obscuring the material conditions that made these objects meaningful. Descriptions are never neutral. Metadata is never innocent. Infrastructure is never invisible. What remains unrecorded is not outside the system but produced by it.

Magazines are historical actors in their own right. Understanding how these infrastructures operated in the past allows us to recognise how they are transformed in the present.

As artificial intelligence increasingly participates in the organisation of visual knowledge, understanding the historical infrastructures of communication becomes an urgent task.

To study magazines is not simply to study the past. It is to investigate how visual knowledge takes form. How it circulates. How it becomes visible. And how it challenges authority.

Magazine Matter calls for a transnational community of researchers, archivists, designers, printers, curators, and data specialists.

No single discipline possesses the object in its entirety. Knowledge emerges through encounter, so the task is to reconnect expertise, material histories, and digital futures.

Knowledge is not contained.

Knowledge is enacted.

Knowledge is material.

Knowledge is relational.
