Podcast

MAGAZINE MATTER is a video podcast series dedicated to the material, technical, and aesthetic processes that have shaped illustrated magazines across different regions and historical periods.

Each 60-minute episode features two short specialist presentations followed by a moderated conversation that brings different perspectives on printing technologies, editorial practices, and visual cultures into dialogue.

The series is organised by the MAGAZINE MATTER research group: Mary Ikoniadou (Leeds Beckett University), Carlotta Castellani (Università degli Studi di Urbino), and Vincent Fröhlich (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen–Nürnberg).

Season 1 – Printing Processes (Summer 2026)

The first season focuses on key printing technologies—including wood engraving, halftone, and rotogravure—and examines how these processes shaped visual aesthetics, layout, editorial decision-making, and reader engagement.
